Music takes center stage in Plump Blossom, the Philippine-produced 3D animated musical feature opening in cinemas nationwide this September.
More than simply accompanying the story, the film’s original songs help tell it — moving from the playful energy of the imperial kitchens to the tenderness of an unexpected romance, the pain of separation, and the growing threat of war.
At the heart of the soundtrack are “Under One Moon” and “Wait for Me,” two original songs that capture the developing relationship between the food-loving Princess Ruo Hua, affectionately known as Plump Blossom, and the young General Jian.
“Under One Moon” evokes the quiet connection between two people whose worlds are very different, while “Wait for Me” carries the longing and uncertainty of a love threatened by duty and war.
The film’s lighter side comes alive through “A Kitchen Symphony,” reflecting Plump Blossom’s great love of food and the lively world of the imperial kitchens. Other musical pieces bring audiences into the grandeur, celebration and adventure of the fictional Huang Dynasty.
The soundtrack also includes “Kingdom Prosperity,” “A Feast in Song,” “Toward Victory,” “Dance of the Plum Blossom,” “Blossom of Delight,” and other original compositions created for the film.
Paulina Yeung and Rafael Sundayan lend their voices to the film’s romantic songs, while Candice Tan, the voice of Princess Ruo Hua, and Maria Buenaventura bring additional musical numbers to life. The film’s music is arranged by Ken Aoki.
Coinciding with the film’s theatrical opening, the Plump Blossom original soundtrack album will also be released on Spotify, YouTube Music and Apple Music/iTunes, allowing audiences to take the music of the film with them beyond the cinema.
Set in a fictional dynasty inspired by ancient Tang Dynasty, Plump Blossom follows a food-loving plump princess who disguises herself as a palace maid to pursue her passion for cooking and discovers a wounded young general hiding within the palace. As she secretly nurses him back to health, an unexpected bond grows between them. But when war threatens the kingdom and their secret puts everything at risk, she must choose between the comforts and privileges of her royal life and protecting her kingdom, her family, and the man she has come to love.
The 85-minute, G-rated animated musical combines romance, comedy, adventure, food and Chinese-inspired cultural elements with original music created to give each part of Plump Blossom’s journey its own emotional voice.
