PBGen Marantan’s ‘Beneath the Badge’ story lives on with launch of book edition

After making its way to the big screen and releasing its official theme song and music video, Beneath the Badge has reached another milestone with the launch of its book edition, bringing its inspiring story to readers in a more personal and enduring form.

Written by Editha Caduaya, who also directed the Beneath the Badge film, the book expands the story beyond the screen, offering readers a more intimate and reflective account of Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan’s life and career. Through its pages, the book chronicles his journey in law enforcement, the challenges he faced in the pursuit of justice, and the values of courage, integrity, and service that have defined his years in uniform.

The book was officially launched on July 3 in Laguna, where Police Brigadier General Hansel Marantan shared his reflections on his career, the realities of law enforcement, and the message he hopes readers will take away from the memoir.

Reflecting on his years in service, Marantan acknowledged that while he has always advocated for peace, the path toward achieving it is not always easy.

“I have always been [a] proponent of peace but in the pursuit of it, sometimes it’s bloody. Sometimes it’s full of controversies. Truth is a thing that we have to defend. We have to defend it with our life and honor. Kung hindi, wala nang maniniwala sa atin as law enforcers.”

“Sabi nila matapang ako. Hindi ako matapang. But I can only be brave when I have to be,” he continued.

Marantan also underscored that Beneath the Badge is not solely about his personal journey but a tribute to the many police officers whose sacrifices often go unrecognized.

“The book, Beneath The Badge, is more than a story. It can be a legacy of courage and honor, and unwavering service to our fellow men. It’s not about me, it’s about us. I’m just one of the representations of the unsung heroes of the police force na hindi naman madipensahan ang state, and we keep on thriving. Every page is precious in the book. It carries wisdom of life including protecting our people and upholding what is right and what is for the good. May it inspire us all — the book.”

He also expressed his gratitude to author and filmmaker Editha Caduaya for the dedication she invested in documenting his story for future generations.

“The author… Editha Caduaya… burned candles for this memoir. Ang dami niyang inubos na oras niya. Ginugulan niya ng panahon talaga yan for the next generation to see how to try to protect the innocent, the weak and the low abiding citizens just like us. Maraming salamat po.”

Now available in book form, Beneath the Badge offers readers a deeper look into Marantan’s journey and the stories behind his years of service.
