‘Project Silence’: a gripping tale of survival amidst chaos

The fight for survival begins.

As a series of catastrophic events unfold on a bridge, survivors make a harrowing escape in the Korean disaster thriller, ‘Project Silence.’ Starring the late actor Lee Sun-kyun, along with Ju Ji-hoon, Kim Hie-won, and Kim Su-an, now showing in Philippine cinemas.

In the movie, a group of individuals is left stranded after extreme foggy conditions result in severely-impaired visibility on the Airport Bridge.

As chain collisions and explosions ravage the bridge, jeopardizing those traversing it, another unexpected terror is unleashed: several mutant dogs from a military experiment called “Project Silence” break free, turning all human survivors into targets.

Among those caught in the chaos are: presidential aide Jung-won (Sun-kyun) and his daughter, Kyung-min (Su-an); a tow truck driver (Ji-hoon) accompanied by his dog; an elderly couple (Moon Sung-geun, Ye Su-jeong) returning from a trip abroad; sisters (Park Hee-von, Park Ju-hyun) who missed their flights; and Dr. Yang (Hie-won), the researcher responsible for Project Silence.

The survivors find themselves thrust together to confront the frightening canines and the imminent danger of the collapsing bridge.

With the entire area now a massive disaster zone, staying alive is bound to be a ruthless and terrifying ride.

Directed by Kim Tae-gon, ‘Project Silence’ was screened at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023 as part of Midnight Screening section, an out-of-competition segment for films with artistic and popular appeal.

“I wanted to portray the fear and tension in an immersive way when familiar things in everyday life suddenly turn into threats,” Tae-gon, who also co-wrote the screenplay, shared in a statement.

Tae-gon is known for directing acclaimed movies ‘Familyhood’ and ‘Sunshine Boys,’ with the latter scoring a Best Screenplay Award at the 2013 Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

Some of Korea’s top production figures also assembled for ‘Project Silence’ – it is produced by Kim Yong-hwa (‘Along with the Gods’ director); with cinematography by Hong Kyung-Pyo (‘Parasite,’ ‘Snowpiercer’); screenplay by Park Joo-suk (‘Train to Busan’); and visual effects by Dexter Studio (‘Space Sweepers,’ ‘Along with the Gods’).

‘Project Silence’ also serves as one of the posthumous releases of Sun-kyun, a notable actor who starred in remarkable dramas like ‘My Mister’ and the Oscar-winning film, ‘Parasite.’

Witness a gripping struggle of survival in the face of relentless peril in ‘Project Silence.’ Now showing in cinemas nationwide.
