What do Christian and Mark Bautista think about AI in music?

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape creative industries, music is among the fields experiencing the most visible transformation. From AI-assisted songwriting to fully generated vocals that rack up millions of streams, the debate over authenticity, artistry, and transparency is growing louder.

During the recent press conference for their upcoming concert ‘Bautista x Bautista’, Filipino music icons Christian Bautista and Mark Bautista shared candid thoughts on how AI-generated music is influencing today’s soundscape — and what it means for artists and listeners alike.

For Christian Bautista, the key issue is not whether AI should be used, but how it is presented to the public. He recognizes that artists approach technology differently — some embrace it, others resist it — but believes honesty should remain non-negotiable.

“Some people will not want to use AI. Some people will want to use it as a tool. Some people will just release it. Ang gusto ko lang sana is if people release it just label it. Label that this was an AI produced song or assisted. That’s it.”

His stance centers on proper labeling. As AI-generated tracks become increasingly sophisticated, listeners may not always distinguish between human-made and machine-assisted creations. For Christian, disclosure empowers audiences to decide for themselves.

He also acknowledged the divided reaction toward AI songs. While some listeners are skeptical, others are clearly embracing the shift.

“Kasi parang merong mga tao, obviously na para is so hesitant pag nakarinig ng AI song. Parang why don’t you just do it on your own. And then on the other side of the coin is… merong AI songs na kumakanta ng Tagalog songs who have 7 million streams or more. So parang this is the world that we live in now. If people will still use AI generated music just kung sino yung gagawa no’n ‘Hi, this is an AI generated song… hope you like it. If you don’t like it then don’t listen to it.’ Then to original songs na not related by AI. That’s my stance on it.”

Mark Bautista, meanwhile, focused on listener behavior and the importance of maintaining respect for artistry.

“I think hindi natin maiwasan kung ano yung especially now hindi natin maiwasan kung ano yung gusto ng mga tao talaga. Kung gusto nilang makinig, may mga songs na lumalabas na AI and may mga taong na-appreciate nila. Hindi mo naman sila pwedeng mapigilan kasi yun yung nagmo-move, na-move sila eh. So hindi mo sila pwedeng ‘bakit ka nakikinig ng ganyan?’”

Rather than criticizing those who enjoy AI-generated tracks, Mark acknowledged that audience preference ultimately shapes the industry. However, he expressed hope that technological advancement would not overshadow the human element of music.

“So, I think gusto ko lang sabihin na sana hindi mawala yung appreciation ng mga tao sa artistry, sa soul, sa effort ng bawat artist or musician. Nando’n pa rin, hindi mawawala.”

As AI continues to influence music-making, both artists emphasized that it’s not about avoiding technology or resisting change. Christian Bautista highlighted the importance of labeling AI-assisted songs clearly, while Mark Bautista reminded everyone that listeners’ choices shape the industry. Together, they stressed honesty, respect for artistry, and keeping the human effort behind music at the forefront.
