Grand Santacruzan by Runway Atelier lights up Intramuros

May in the Philippines is never complete without the vibrant celebration of Santacruzan, a beloved tradition that brings together faith, fashion, and Filipino heritage. On May 18, 2025, this cherished custom took center stage once again as Runway Atelier’s Grand Santacruzan lit up the historic streets of Intramuros, Manila with a breathtaking display of beauty and devotion.

A tradition rooted in both faith and folklore, the Santacruzan is the culminating event of Flores de Mayo, a month-long devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It commemorates the legendary journey of Queen Helena (Reyna Elena) and her son, Emperor Constantine, in search of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Introduced to the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period, the Santacruzan evolved into a religious pageant where young women, dressed as biblical and historical queens, take part in a solemn procession under floral arches—symbolizing the triumph of faith.

The event began at the Foro de Intramuros, just in front of the iconic San Agustin Church, before gracefully winding its way to Puerto Real Gardens. Along this storied route, participants from The Runway Atelier—including models and artists—transformed into living embodiments of the Flores de Mayo queens, donning elaborate gowns and embodying each role with grace and reverence.

Among the most anticipated figures in every Santacruzan is Reyna Elena, the symbolic queen who leads the procession. This year, the role was portrayed by singer and model Lizzie Aguinaldo, who impressed the crowd with her grace and presence.

The procession also highlighted standout individuals whose presence and styling captured the spirit of the tradition. The Best Dressed awardees included:

  • Mhariane Angeles – Reyna dela Rosa Mystica
  • Ann Marie Tolentino – Reyna dela Coronation
  • Chryzle Ava Geronimo – Reyna Emperatriz
  • Aliana Orfanel – Reyna del Rosario

In recognition of their camera-ready charm, the Mr. and Ms. Photogenic awards were given to:

  • Ardy Rich Marsada and Miguel Casimiro (Regal Escorts)
  • Zowie Xin (Reyna de los Claveles)
  • Lizzie Aguinaldo (Reyna Eleyna)

Crowd favorites who received warm applause and special recognition included:

  • Rhiana Beatrice Alto (Reyna de los Angeles)
  • Theodore Benzley T. Salgado (Regal Escort)

A vital part of any Santacruzan is the artistry of the floral arcs, which were also celebrated during the event. Winners of the Best Arc competition were:

  • 1st Place (₱5,000): Rhiana Beatrice Alto & Theodore Benzley T. Salgado
  • 2nd Place (₱3,000): Aliana Orfanel
  • 3rd Place (₱2,000): Princess Mikayla Baruiz

With its blend of solemnity, spectacle, and style, Runway Atelier’s Grand Santacruzan served as a heartfelt tribute to a timeless Filipino tradition. Beyond the pageantry, it was a celebration of community, cultural pride, and enduring faith—proof that in every flower-laden arch and graceful queen, the spirit of the Filipino people continues to bloom.
