The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) recognized distinguished Filipino-Chinese individuals for their remarkable contributions to society at its Chinese New Year Dinner Reception and Special Awards Ceremony on January 29, 2025, at the Golden Bay Seafood Restaurant in Pasay City.
Honorees and Their Achievements
Former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos – Recognized for her pivotal role in supporting the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos in establishing Philippines-China diplomatic relations in 1975. The 96-year-old was represented by her daughter, Senator Imee Marcos, who delivered a speech recalling the historic 1975 opening of diplomatic ties and highlighting the Chinese heritage of the Marcos-Romualdez family, tracing their lineage to Chinese immigrant Pei Ling Po (later known as Luis Romualdez).

Ricky Lee (National Artist & 2024 MMFF Best Screenplay Winner) – Honored for his exceptional achievements in literature and film as a scriptwriter, playwright, novelist, journalist, and educator. His latest award-winning film, Green Bones, was inspired by a Chinese belief that “green bones” signify the goodness of a departed person. His late father, Lee Hian Chin, was once Secretary General of the Camarines Norte Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

Jessica Soho (GMA 7 Journalist) – Recognized for her integrity and excellence in journalism. She recently created a TV documentary tracing her roots to her grandfather’s ancestral village in Guangdong, China, strengthening her connection to her Chinese heritage.
Kenneth Cobonpue (Designer) – Honored for revolutionizing Philippine industrial design and showcasing Filipino craftsmanship on the world stage. His works have brought global recognition to Filipino creativity and innovation.
Cultural and Diplomatic Significance
The event, led by FFCCCII President Dr. Cecilio K. Pedro, was a celebration of both Chinese-Filipino heritage and the upcoming 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic relations on June 5, 2025. The FFCCCII, representing 170 Filipino-Chinese chambers of commerce nationwide, continues to contribute to economic growth, education, and socio-civic initiatives.
The Lunar New Year, officially recognized as a United Nations (UN) holiday in 2023 and designated as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2024, symbolizes a shared history and strong ties between Filipinos and the Chinese community.
By honoring Filipino excellence, celebrating cultural heritage, and promoting unity in the Year of the Snake, the event reaffirmed the lasting friendship between the Philippines and China.
