What if the Philippines had never been colonized? The Kingdom, an official entry in the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), brings this intriguing idea to the big screen. Directed by Mike Tuviera, the film imagines a thriving monarchy untouched by colonization, creating a world rich in culture and tradition.
The story is set in the Kaharian ng Kalayaan and follows Lakan Makisig (Vic Sotto), a king faced with the tough decision of choosing his successor. Vic Sotto takes on a rare dramatic role, showing his acting range, while Piolo Pascual gives a strong performance as Sulo, an outcast who disrupts the monarchy. Cristine Reyes, Sue Ramirez, and Sid Lucero also shine, adding depth to the family-centered story.
Vic Sotto’s portrayal of Lakan Makisig is a big change from his usual comedic roles. Known for his humor, Vic Sotto proves he can deliver a serious and commanding performance. This marks his first time in a full-length drama film, a departure from his usual dramatic performances in Eat Bulaga’s Lenten specials. His role as the king brings the themes of power, loyalty, and family legacy to life in a relatable way.
Fans of Vic Sotto’s comedy will appreciate his transformation in this film. He anchors the story with a strong presence, proving that he is capable of much more than making people laugh.
Piolo Pascual once again showcases his remarkable acting prowess. Just like every role he portrays, he proves his skills by bringing depth and emotion to his character as Sulo, the outcast whose return shakes the kingdom.

The supporting cast also delivers amazing performances. Cristine Reyes, Sue Ramirez, and Sid Lucero bring complexity to their roles, while Iza Calzado, Art Acuña, Ruby Ruiz, Zion Cruz, and Nico Antonio add richness to the film’s world. Together, they create a believable and immersive story.
The production design and cinematography are breathtaking. The detailed costumes, traditional tattoos, and majestic palace sets bring the Kaharian ng Kalayaan to life, making the world feel authentic and visually stunning.
Produced by MQuest Ventures Inc., M-ZET TV Productions, and APT Entertainment Inc., The Kingdom is an official entry to the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival. It opens on December 25 in cinemas nationwide.
At its core, The Kingdom tells a familiar story about culture, power, and family. It reimagines Filipino identity in a way that is both emotional and thought-provoking. By exploring “what could have been,” the film invites viewers to reflect on history and heritage without being too political.
