Isang Himala is a breathtaking reimagining of the 1982 Filipino classic Himala, now masterfully adapted into a musical-drama for the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival.
The story follows Elsa, portrayed by Aicelle Santos, a young woman who claims to have been visited by the Virgin Mary and granted the power to heal. Set in the drought-stricken village of Cupang, the film delves into themes of faith, desperation, and the human condition, resonating as powerfully today as it did in the original.
The production shines for its inspired casting, bringing together seasoned theater actors whose stage-honed talent elevates every scene. Aicelle Santos steps into the iconic role of Elsa with reverence and originality, delivering a performance that is both vocally stunning and emotionally profound. Her renditions of “Gawin Mo Akong Sining” and “Ang Himala ay Nasa Puso ng Tao” are unforgettable highlights, perfectly encapsulating the tension between faith and doubt at the core of the story.
The supporting cast, including Bituin Escalante, Neomi Gonzales, Kakki Teodoro, and David Ezra, provides compelling performances that enrich the narrative. In particular, Kakki Teodoro, portraying Nimia, delivers hauntingly beautiful vocals that heighten the film’s emotional impact, solidifying her as a strong contender for Best Supporting Actress.
The production design is equally commendable, evoking the grandeur of a meticulously staged theater production. Intricately crafted sets bring the haunting yet vibrant atmosphere of Baryo Cupang to life, while stunning cinematography ensures every frame is visually captivating.
Under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Pepe Diokno, with a screenplay by National Artist Ricky Lee and music by the incomparable Vincent de Jesus, this adaptation retains the original’s poignant essence while seamlessly incorporating the musical genre.
From CreaZion Studios, presented by Unitel, Straightshooters, Kapitol Films, and CMB Production, Isang Himala is an official entry to the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival. It opens in cinemas nationwide on December 25.
Isang Himala is more than a film—it’s an immersive experience that stirs the soul. Its fresh approach appeals to a new generation while honoring the timeless themes of the original.
