The highly anticipated Filipino action-thriller Topakk is set to make its local premiere as an official entry to the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) this Christmas season. After earning international acclaim in festivals such as Cannes, Locarno, and Austin, this homegrown masterpiece is ready to thrill Philippine audiences starting December 25.
During the movie’s grand press conference on December 4 in San Antonio, District 1, Quezon City, its lead star Cong. Arjo Atayde expressed his gratitude and anticipation for the film’s MMFF inclusion.
“Ito ang pinaka-action-packed [na movie] this coming MMFF,” he said. “I’m very much privileged. We are very much happy to be part of the 50th [edition]. It’s not just the regular MMFF; it’s made special dahil nga 50th. Sana po masuportahan niyo kami with Topakk. Definitely, meron din pong kasamang adbokasiya which is the PTSD that definitely we can tackle later on.”
On another hand, her leading lady in this film, Julia Montes, shared her pride and excitement about the film.
Sylvia Sanchez, executive producer of the film, also spoke highly of the cast and crew.
A Gritty Film with a Strong Message
‘Topakk’ tells the story of an ex-special forces operative (Atayde) with PTSD who works as a security guard. One day, he attempts to save a woman (Montes) who’s being hunted by a corrupt police death squad for a drug cartel.
Julia emphasized the relevance of the themes tackled in the movie, saying:
Arjo Atayde further elaborated on the film’s depth:
“May this film be an advocacy or an advocate not just for PTSD but for mental health in general. May this be a thorough explanation of how hard it is for all the arm forces, sa ating militar, sa kanilang pinagdadaanan para lang matulungan tayong Pilipino for all the rights. Para sa mga mamayang Pilipino. For everything that they do. May this be a good explanation, may this be a vivid explanation to that.
“Lastly, every character… there’s no small roles. And I don’t believe in small roles. Every character, and this is why I fell in love with Topakk, no matter how bloody it is, no matter how gory, gritty, it is. It explains how human, each character is. And that’s what we want people to see.”
