In a world where beauty standards often favor lighter skin tones, it’s empowering to see more brands embracing morena beauty. It’s something that the Philippines’ Supreme Actress Lovi Poe always has in mind.
With the launch of her makeup line, ‘Love, You by Lovi’, in collaboration with the cosmetics brand ‘Ready, Set, Glow,’ Lovi Poe champions morenas, encouraging others to embrace their natural skin and redefine beauty on their own terms.
During the launch of the makeup collections, Lovi reflected on her journey in the entertainment industry. She shared how she faced challenges early on and even felt ‘unpretty’ due to her skin color.
She shared, “When I entered here [showbiz], I felt like my younger self would never have imagined this to happen. And it’s like, I got a lot of flacks nung nagsisimula ako because I was too dark. And you know, that made me feel so unpretty.”
Lovi recounted how, during her first TV series, there was pressure to lighten her skin just to be considered beautiful.
“Imagine my first series, for me to be able to be called beautiful, I had, they wanted to lighten my skin and paint over my skin and make me use light foundation,” she said.
She noted the irony that while some people are encouraged to look tanned, she was being asked to change her natural skin tone.
“Can you imagine, others, they would make them tan to make them look, you know what I mean? So, …may different effect yon when you’re younger, siyempre,” she reflected.
Despite this, Lovi stood her ground. She described herself as “one of those stubborn kids” who refused to conform.
“And you know what, siguro I’d like to say I was one of those stubborn kids talaga na, you know what, matigas yung ulo ko in such a way na ‘No’. I put my foot down, I was young, sabi ko, ‘I’m just going to embrace myself for who I am. We have to stop this light makeup.’ And I want something that suits me and that’s for me.”
For Lovi, the launch of her makeup line is significant because it represents her journey of self-acceptance and resilience. She knows that many people face similar pressures and voices telling them they aren’t beautiful. But, as she emphasized, “And that’s why …malaking bagay ‘to sa akin, because I know there’s a lot of people especially—na parang—who would have these voices around them and telling them that they’re not beautiful. Because people set standards, di ba, when it comes to beauty. But no, ikaw lang makaka-define sa sarili mo, kung ano yung sarili mong ganda.”
