Movie review: ‘Crosspoint’ crosses multi-cultural talents

Crosspoint is an exhilarating action thriller that blends Filipino and Japanese talent, delivering a gripping tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption. Produced by High Road Creatives and 034 Productions, the film is rated PG by the MTRCB. It stars Carlo Aquino and Takehiro Hira, both known for their powerful performances.

Carlo Aquino, a 2019 Asian Academy Creative Awards Best Actor, shines as Manuel, an illegal Filipino entertainer in Japan. Takehiro Hira, an Emmy-nominated actor, plays Shigeru, a bankrupt Japanese businessman. Together, they form an unlikely duo, planning to capture a notorious serial killer to claim a massive bounty.

The direction by Donie Ray Ordiales, a Filipino independent filmmaker based in Japan, is both gripping and intense. Ordiales masterfully builds suspense, transforming a seemingly quiet setting into a tense, action-packed landscape. The editing and cinematography enhance this atmosphere, starting with calm moments that quickly spiral into edge-of-your-seat tension.

What makes Crosspoint stand out is its ability to mix familiar elements from romantic films set in Japan with an exciting action-thriller plot. The performances of both Aquino and Hira are magnetic, each bringing their characters to life with depth and emotion. Supporting actors like Ian De Leon, Sarah Abad, and Marlene Dela Peña further elevate the film, proving the talent of the Filipino cast.

Now showing in cinemas nationwide, Crosspoint is a must-watch. It not only highlights Filipino talent but also showcases the potential of independent filmmakers like Ordiales. The film was a highlight at its advance screening, attended by the stars and production team. Here’s hoping more audiences support this remarkable project, encouraging more collaborations and future films of this caliber.
