Movie review: ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ gives darker look into madness

“Joker: Folie à Deux” is an American musical psychological thriller that takes a deep dive into the mind of Arthur Fleck, portrayed masterfully by Joaquin Phoenix. The film explores his transformation from a struggling party clown and aspiring stand-up comedian into the infamous “Joker,” an unwilling symbol for those who shower him with the admiration he always craved.

Set in Arkham State Hospital, Arthur is now institutionalized, awaiting trial for his crimes as the Joker. Along this turbulent journey, he grapples with his dual identity while forming an unexpected and intense connection with fellow patient Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga. Her character becomes a source of both fascination and obsession for Arthur, adding a compelling new layer to his story.

Rated R-16, the film delves into sensitive topics like mental health, the harshness of the world, and how living up to others’ perceptions can either make or break a person. While the musical aspect might not appeal to everyone, I found it refreshing—especially with Lady Gaga’s involvement. It lightens the tone and makes the film’s profound messages more approachable.

The movie emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and authenticity, leaving viewers with heavy emotions and thought-provoking reflections on life and identity. You’ll likely leave the theater pondering, “That’s life… or is it?”

Don’t miss out on this captivating look into the Joker’s world—’Joker: Folie à Deux’ premieres today, October 2!

A big thank you to Warner Bros. Pictures for the invite to the IMAX premiere of this film. (reviewed by Oscar)
