Prepare of a thrilling journey as the newest thriller crime movie ‘Pasahero‘ hits cinemas this October 9. Starring Louise delos Reyes, Yumi Garcia, Katya Santos, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Andre Yllana, Keann Johnson, Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Dani Zee, and Bea Binene, it is directed by Vivamax Cult Director Roman Perez, Jr.
Coming from the hotness of ‘Unang Tikim,’ starring Angeli Khang and Robb Guinto, director Roman Perez, Jr. marks his second theatrical release with a very different genre, exploring the horror of not knowing and not expecting what could happen next.
“Gusto naming gumawa ng urban domestic thriller,” he explained during the media conference of their new film. “Natatakot tayo kasi natatakot tayo sa mangyayari. Hindi tayo natatakot do’n sa sitwasyon. Natatakot tayo sa mga mangyayari [sa characters] na [pwede ring] mangyayari sa ‘yo. ‘Yon yung gusto namin mangyari.”
Direk Roman further detailed how this film is different from the usual scary flicks we see on the big screen.
“Ibang-iba talaga ‘tong Pasahero. Una, sabi ko nga sa sarili ko, sociological horror siya. Hindi siya yung napapanood nating traditional horror na may maraming jump scares. Ito, mas psychological, sociological… Hindi siya typical horror na nananakot na ghost, elementals, or ano pa man. Ito yung horror na tinatakot ka dahan-dahan.”
When asked if she had personally witnessed a crime and how she reacted, lead actress Louise Delos Reyes’ (who is seen as a ghost in the poster) reflected on both her personal experience and a broader commentary on crime in the Philippines.
Delos Reyes stressed the importance of electing responsible leaders and thinking not only about the present but also the future of the country and its people.
“Let’s all be mindful sa lahat ng mga taong nilalagay sa posisyon. And sana lagi nating isipin ang Pilipinas, tayong mga Pilipino, ang mga generation na susunod…,” she added.
On another hand, Bea Binene expressed that she feels nervous with every project she takes on, whether it’s a film or a series. However, she always hopes for the best and stays positive despite the uncertainty.
She said, “Ako, kahit saang project, para sa akin, pelikula man o series man…, for me nandiyan palagi yung kaba. Kasi siyempre hindi mo naman alam kung paano tatanggapin ng viewers, ng mga supporter, but of course, you always wish for the best.”
Michelle (Louise delos Reyes), a simple girl from the province and a newly grad, is optimistic about starting a new life in Manila. But, during her late night commute in the city, she gets molested by a masked man, and none of her fellow passengers comes to the rescue. She becomes a victim of bystander apathy or bystander effect, a social psychological theory that states that individuals are less likely to help when others are present.
One of the onlookers is Angel (Bea Binene), a graphic and visual artist who has many online followers. She’s been orphaned at a very young age, and because of a traumatic event, she promised to never help anyone again.
Then, there is Trina (Katya Santos), a single mother to a 10-year-old girl, Belle, (Dani Zee) who is also aboard the train. Trina is aware that Michelle is in trouble, but her fear of endangering her daughter makes her turn a blind eye.
If there’s anyone capable of saving Michelle, it’s Tom (Mark Anthony Fernandez), a former boxer. Now, he trains young boxers for a living, so he still has the strength and agility to fight. But, seeing the masked rapist, Tom just freezes on the spot.
Instead of teaming up together to take on the masked man, Martin (Andre Yllana), Alvin (Keann Johnson), and their friend Drea (Yumi Garcia), a socialite, just choose to engross themselves in their gadgets. Alvin, a rich kid who brands himself as humanitarian, and Martin, who thinks of himself as socially aware, prove themselves no better than Tom.
As the story continues, the consequences of the passengers’ inaction will be revealed. They will be haunted not just by their guilt, but by something sinister. Even their loved ones are not spared.
If they have failed Michelle once, can this group of people still make up for it and give Michelle the justice she deserves?
Come and witness their journey. From Viva Films and JPHLiX Films present a Studio Viva production in cooperation with BLVCK Films and Pelikula Indiopendent “Pasahero” opens October 9, 2024 in cinemas nationwide.
