The new movie ‘Kuman Thong,’ directed by Xian Lim, is a chilling horror film that delves into themes of grief, supernatural beliefs, and the lengths a mother will go to reunite with her child. Starring Cindy Miranda, Althea Ruedas, Max Nattapol, Jariya Therakaosal, Emmanuel Esquivel, #KumanThong is now showing in cinemas nationwide, presented by Viva Films and Studio Viva.
‘Kuman Thong’ is based on a Thai occult tradition in which a figurine housing a child’s spirit brings luck if properly revered… and harm if neglected. The story follows Clara (Cindy), who travels to Thailand with her daughter, Katie (Althea), to seek the blessing of Namfon (Jariya), the mother of her fiancé Sai Chon (Max). However, Namfon isn’t enthused about the idea of her only son migrating to the Philippines, believing that the couple is not yet ready, especially with Clara still grieving the loss of her son, Isaac (Emman). Clara even carries around the urn bearing Isaac’s ashes.

Cindy Miranda’s performance is nothing short of remarkable. She flawlessly captures the emotional turmoil of a grieving mother. Her performance shines on the big screen, from the subtle emotions reflected in her eyes to the intense dramatic scenes. Miranda has truly proven her talent in this movie.
Althea Ruedas, known for her roles in tear-jerking and heart-wrenching films like “Doll House” and “Instant Daddy,” once again demonstrates her versatility. At a young age, Ruedas showcases her ability to excel in various genres, including horror.

The film excels in creating a chilling atmosphere with its impressive cinematography that showcases Thai folklore and landscapes, paired with eerie sound design. Patience is needed for a rewarding climax. However, some scenes, especially the crucial ending, could have been clearer for viewers to grasp what the film truly wants to convey—unless the intention is to let the audience have their own interpretations.
For writer-director Xian Lim, it’s fascinating to see his craft on the big screen. As both an actor and filmmaker, he combines his talents to become a multi-faceted artist, capable of honing his skills through various works and genres. It’s exciting to look forward to seeing more of what he is capable of doing.
It’s a must-watch for horror enthusiasts. Catch ‘Kuman Thong,’ now showing in cinemas nationwide.
