Jia Ling’s comedy-drama ‘YOLO’ strikes big in North America, raking in $1.5 million since debut

China’s leading female director, Jia Ling, has seen her hit comedy-drama, “YOLO,” exceed $1.5 million in earnings in the United States and Canada since its theatrical premiere on International Women’s Day, March 8. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI), the film has accumulated a total of $2.8 million in SPRI markets as of Sunday, March 17, with $1.5 million stemming from the U.S. and Canada. Sony Pictures International Productions secured international distribution rights for the film, which was both written and directed by Jia Ling and features her in a starring role.

Following its remarkable success in China and the positive reception from audiences, the Chinese-language film was introduced to 200 theaters in the U.S. and Canada on March 8, achieving an impressive opening weekend performance of $840K, with an average of $4,200 per location. This earned the film a place in the Top 10 at the U.S. and Canadian weekend box office. Presently, the film continues to be screened in theaters.

Outside of the U.S. and Canada, SPRI launched the film in Australia and New Zealand, generating a combined running gross of $615K. The film is scheduled for release in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore on March 21, in the Philippines on April 17, and in Thailand on April 18.

Since its premiere in China on February 10, “YOLO” has captivated audiences, grossing an impressive $484 million at the domestic box office. It has secured the title of the highest-grossing film during the Lunar New Year holiday and maintained the top spot for two consecutive weekends. Globally, the film has amassed a total of $486 million in earnings through March 17.
