Apo Hapon (A Love Story) is the latest entry to Joel Lamangan’s impressive filmography. There is really no stopping the master director as he proves himself time and again to be as sharp and as clever as ever.
In this debut offering of GK Production, audiences are taken on a delightful journey into romance against the stunning Cordillera backdrop with a mix of veterans, big screen and small screen regulars, and a promising lead actress to watch out for. The film weaves love stories from different times, creating a warm and thought-provoking tale.
The on-screen chemistry between JC De Vera and Sakura Akiyoshi shines, capturing the audience’s attention. Akiyoshi, a promising actress, impresses with her natural acting skills, leaving a lasting impression. Her dedication to improving her Filipino delivery suggests a bright future in the industry.

A notable strength of the film is its storytelling. Despite budget constraints, the integration of flashbacks, especially those from World War II, is done decently. The choice to capture these scenes in black and white with a pop of red, similar to Lamangan’s recent films, adds a unique touch.
Enhancing the narrative’s depth and significance are the supporting cast members, including Lianne Valentin, who brings a captivating presence to the screen. Fumiya Sankai maintains his charm and excellence even in serious roles, while Nella Dizon captivates with her magnetic eyes and stunning appearance, whether depicted in color or black and white. Jim Pebanco and Elora Españo, both indie regulars, contribute their unique talents to enrich the storyline. Rico Barrera, consistently reliable in any assigned role, adds significantly to the overall impact of the ensemble. The supporting cast in the movie adds special qualities, shaped by Lamangan’s deep experience as a director and his impressive history in filmmaking.

Apo Hapon (A Love Story) goes beyond a typical romantic film, offering a touching exploration of time, love, and the enduring human spirit. With great performances, genuine chemistry, and a well-crafted story, “Apo Hapon” stands out as a heartfelt experience, leaving a lasting impression on the heart as a rom-com with a punch of period drama.
It opens on March 6 in select cinemas nationwide.
