To prepare for the new Mean Girls movie, I revisited the 2004 classic starring Lindsay Lohan. The upcoming film is based on the musical rather than the original, yet familiar quotes remain, and the storyline flows more smoothly with improved dialogue.
This fresh take on Mean Girls is tailored for today’s audience, particularly those immersed in social media and smartphones. It’s not as mean, but the actors shine. ReneĆ© Rapp as Regina George is either loved or not, and Avantika as Karen Shetty is funny. Tina Fey reprises her role as Ms. Norbury, and there’s a surprising [spoiler alert] cameo by Lindsay Lohan.

Angourie Rice takes the lead as Cady Heron. She starts a bit distant, being a homeschooled girl from Kenya, but she undergoes growth throughout the movie. The initial lack of empathy turns into a positive change by the end.

The movie has a bit of a stage play feel, maybe because it’s from a musical. I wished for smoother transitions, not like what you usually see on a stage. The songs and dances are somewhat stage-like but add fun to the movie.
In short, Mean Girls is a blend of old and new and it is still fetch. Even with some stagey bits, it’s funny and has a good story. The mix of memories from the past and today’s style makes it an enjoyable movie. It’s sure to make you laugh and offers a fresh perspective on teenage stories, perfect for a fun time with friends and family. Whether you liked the first one or just want a fun movie, check it out on February 7.
