The world has been rough on Yeon-gyu (Hong Xa-bin) ever since he was a kid. Living in a poor, chaotic environment, he always had to deal with his stepfather’s violence and seeing his mother suffer. He thinks of a way to escape it all, to leave with his mother and start over in another country, but he still needs to earn more money to proceed with his plan.
Yeon-Gyu also faces trouble while protecting his sister and needs cash as a settlement, this is how he meets Chi-geon (Song Joong-ki), a known notorious gang leader in the area. Tough, strong-willed, and with a heart of stone, Chi-geon involves Yeon-gyu in his dealings to help the young man earn money.
Yeon-gyu and Chi-geon face trouble night and day for their gang. Yeon-gyu also gradually adjusts, and Chi-geon becomes like a big brother to him.
As they face crimes hand in hand, they get themselves into more and more dangerous situations. What awaits these two young men? Will they ever be free from the hell they live in? Is there still hope for a new life? Or this is how it’s going to be ‘til the end?
Hopeless is Kim Chang-hoon’s directorial debut feature. The promising filmmaker has all eyes on him and is definitely a new talent to watch out for after this debut film of his premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Hopeless lead stars Hong Xa-bin and Song Joong-ki are also a big deal as its director. Hong Xa-bin is an up-and-coming actor who’s made a big impression and earned critical praise for his performances in his remarkable short films Vacation and Save Me. Hong Xa-bin shares his life-changing experience in filming Hopeless. “There was not a single day of wasted filming, and everyone showed intense concentration while shooting.”
Song Joong-ki, on the other hand, has long been proving his talent as an actor and has made a name for himself, starring in hit movies and series such as Space Sweepers, Vincenzo, Reborn Rich, and many more. Song Joong-ki adds another notable role to his list as he transforms into Chi-geon and embraces this dark, almost villain character.
“I believe this was a project that the Korean film industry definitely needs to make, and I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to take part in it.” Song Joong-ki shares about the film.
Another thing to watch out for in the film is the portrayal of singer-actress Kim Hyoung-seo (also known as Bibi) as Yeong-gyu’s younger sister Hayan. Bibi shares, “Hopeless is a film in which I could take another step on the path to becoming an adult.”
