Actor, rapper, vlogger, and filmmaker Pio Balbuena, together with Team Tambay, held a press conference last July 23 to introduce the ‘Tambay Caps’ to more people. Their brand provides opportunities for tambays to make a living on their own.
‘Tambay’ is a Filipino slang word for a jobless person. But for Pio, it’s more than just a slang word for the bystanders.
Pio shared how Tambay Traders, Inc. will provide a chance to many tambays.
“Ito naman is an opportunity lang, isang pintuan na pwede nilang buksan at pasukin at pwede ring hindi. Marami pong opportunities na nandyan eh, hahanapin lang nung mga tambay eh.”
“…Yung sa amin kasi, it’s an opportunity na parang kahit wala silang puhunan pwede silang makagawa ng pera at kaysa gumawa pa sila ng ibang bagay na masama, for example, lalo na sa mga tambay alam naman natin yun kaysa mang-snatch pa sila diyan, kaysa mang-hold up pa sila e, mas malaki ang kikitain nila sa Tambay Cap,” he emphasized.
As far as inspiration is concerned, vintage sport caps inspired the design of Tambay Caps and this is what he incorporated to its own designs.
“Yung designs ng Tambay cap is kino-conptuallize ito based do’n sa mga lumang mga sombrero ng sports noong araw, yung mga vintage caps noon. So ginawaan natin ng version ang mga Pilipino, tapos pinalitan natin: Ginawa nating Tambay yung brand. Pero may ibang designs din kaming nilalabas na mga original design din na hindi kalapit do’n sa mga pegs na yo’n.”
Also present to support his endeavor was his wife, Aira Balbuena, who works with good dynamics with Pio. The rest of Team Tambay, including Balong and Jumbo, also graced the event.
Team Tambay also announced that there will be a Tambay Festival on September 30 with performances and get-together of tambays at the Quezon City Memorial City. The said festival aims to be a fun-filled gathering of cap collectors in one big, advocacy-driven event.
