Movie review: ‘Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko’

🎶 Ang aking pangako na ang pag-ibig ko’y laging sa ‘yo… Kahit maputi na ang buhok ko 🎶

The ending line from the chorus of Rey Valera’s most popular song in Spotify, “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko,” is just an icon in the landscape of Original Pilipino Music that it has been used in so many movies, TV shows, and other content. There’s such a glowing essence right at the core of that line but never was there a movie that was dedicated to the life story as well as the very music of Sir Rey — until the eponymous Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok came into fruition and even became an official entry to the first-ever Summer Metro Manila Film Festival.

The entire special advance screening of this biopic film directed by Joven Tan was filled with pure nostalgia and musical atmosphere. Some of the stars themselves were present to support Rey Valera and the production team. RK Bagatsing, Rosanna Roces, Dennis Padilla, Eric Nicolas, Rico Barerra, Ronnie Lazaro, and Shira Tweg among others, attended the premiere night and were with the audience in filing the Dolby Cinema of Gateway with thunderous applause and burning love to the OPM icon.

Every single song in the movie hit a mark at the audience. Who wouldn’t know a Rey Valera song? Who wouldn’t find themselves in the lyrics — singing their hearts out and relating their own lives to the melodic stories of his songs? It’s quite intriguing to discover the origins of the songs like “Walang Kapalit” and “Maging Sino Ka Man,” with the star-studded cast of the film “Kahit Maputi Na ang Buhok Ko.”

Be swooned by the music, the life lessons, and the beauty of love in #KahitMaputiNaAngBuhokKo. It’s worth the admission fee this summer break at the first edition of Summer MMFF.

The film also stars Aljur Abrenica, Gelli de Belen, Josh de Guzman, Christopher de Leon, Lotlot de Leon, Jenine Desiderio, Meg Imperial, Gian Magdangal, Carlo Mendoza, Ara Mina, Arlene Muhlach, Pekto Nacua, Eric Nicolas, Epy Quizon, Arman Reyes, Ariel Rivera, Ricky Rivero, Lloyd Samartino, Lou Veloso, Gardo Versoza.

It opens April 8 in all theaters nationwide from Saranggola Media.

About ‘Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko’

Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko: The Music of Rey Valera is an anthology and origin film of the life and career of Rey Valera, centering on the inspirations behind his Original Pilipino Music chartbusters.

Rey Valera, played by Ramon Khino ‘RK’ Bagatsing, relives the inspirations—people, situations, communities, and times—that spurred him to compose some of his most popular and deeply meaningful Original Pilipino Music hits across the decades of his iconic career. Rey chooses ten of his OPM blockbusters to weave a tapestry of the human condition and his reflections on the stories of what make the Filipino a Filipino and composites of some of the people he encountered in his life.
