Movie Review: ‘The Black Phone’ (2022)

The Black Phone’ stands out as a horror thriller film with an excellent story that can scare the hell out of everyone — even for non-fans of horror movies like me. Its eerie cinematography is one thing but the dedicated acting from its cast — led by a scary Ethan Hawke and the breakout star Mason Thames — makes me grip (so hard) on my seat from its curious beginning to its appeasing end.

#TheBlackPhone tells the story of Finney Shaw (played by #MasonThames). He is a shy but clever 13-year-old boy who happened to be abducted by a killer (played by #EthanHawke).

What makes it creepier is a place where the latter holds the former: a soundproof basement with all the marks and memories of a sadistic person who has done past crimes without any remorse. With the killer’s mask on, troubles ensue as audiences are expected to bite their lips as they await for the kid to escape.

As the titular object on the wall starts to ring (even if it is disconnected), our protagonist soon learns that he can hear weird voices who could either help him find his way out or make the experience worse.

Distributed by Warner Bros. Philippines, The Black Phone will have sneak previews (or advance screenings) on July 11 and 12 (next Monday and Tuesday) in major theaters. Its wide release is set on July 20 (Wednesday).

I would like to heartily thank Universal Pictures PH for inviting me to their press screening at their office to see this title in advance.
